Allogeneic Bone Marrow Transplantation in CML

Abstract

|
During last 4 years, 5 adults(median age 32 years) and 1 child (age 12 years) with
chronic myelogenous leukemia have received allogeneic bone marrow transplantation(BM
T) from histocompatable sibling donors after preparation with Daunorubicin, Cyclophosp-
hamide or Melphalan and Total body irradiation(TBI) as conditioning regimen. All
patients had prompt engraftment and achieved complete hematologic remission except
one. Four patients remain alive and enjoy continuous disease free survival. One patient
with blast crisis and marrow fibrosis died from interstitial penumonitis with lazy
engraftment.
One patient who was transplanted in blast crisis relapsed on 11 mo. posttransplant
and died.
Even if our experience is limited in number, allogeneic BMT after high dose combined
chemotherapy and TBI might provide long term sustained hematologic remission or even
cure when BMT is performed in chronic or early accelerated phase of CML.
